Djokovic was born and raised by his parents Dijana (née Žagar) and Srdjan Djokovic in Belgrade, SR Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia.

He has two younger brothers Marko and Djordje who previously played professional tennis.

When his parents noticed his interest in playing tennis at age 4, they took him to a tennis camp in Novi Sad. At six years old, he was already being coached by tennis player Jelena Gencic.

Jelena helped him move overseas where later he was able to win the European championships n singles, doubles, and team competition when he was 14 years old.
